Whoever the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback come Week 1, he won't be the same as last year's.
That much was cemented when Justin Fields left for the New York Jets.
And that move puts Pittsburgh in not so great company…
Steelers to have five years of different Week 1 starters at QB
The Steelers will have a new starting Week 1 quarterback for the 5th consecutive year, which will tie them with the Falcons for the most current consecutive streak. Considering that, the Steelers put out a 38-29-1 record and 3 playoff appearances (all losses) over that span. Falcons went 29-39 and no playoff appearances over the same timeframe.

This is both equally impressive yet embarrassing for the Steelers. On one hand, they have never had a losing season over the previous four years, and they are coming off back-to-back playoff appearances, albeit first-round exits.
On the other hand, their inability to find a successor in the post-Big Ben era paints a picture of incompetence, especially for a team so good at drafting. Roethlisberger, Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Justin Fields and Rusell Wilson serve as a giant group of middle of the road band aids.
And that is all the Steelers own doing. No one told them to reach for Kenny Pickett, to let Justin Fields walk in free agency, or to tie themselves to Russell Wilson as opposed to trading up for one of the six quarterbacks in last year's crop of signal callers.
But that's exactly what they did. And in all likelihood, if they get their way, it's what they're going to do this year as well.
Whatever Aaron Rodgers has left, it's not long for the NFL. And in fairness to the Steelers, they seemingly have their eye on one prospect in particular and next years draft is loaded with signal callers.
But signing Rodgers likely means this trend will continue into 2026.
Now if the Steelers shock the world and win a Super Bowl this year, all of this will be for not. And with players like Cam Heyward voicing their opinion on the team's need to win now, maybe that will happen.
But until their 7th Lombardi is hoisted, a lot of questions will remain in Pittsburgh.
