Steelers Training Camp Day Five: George Pickens shines, Cory Trice injured

Today was the first day of pads for the Pittsburgh Steelers

And you could tell that was the case by the intensity, the effort, and the plays on the field.

Highlight reel catches, deep shots, an aggressive ground attack, and much more…

Here are the sights and sounds of day five in Latrobe:

George Pickens Defies Logic

Easily one of the best catches you will ever see, Pickens is going to take the league by storm this year. Replicating yet another gravity-defying catch and cementing himself as one of the league's best acrobats, his spectacular catch rating in Madden had better be a 99.

And I don't think this will stop anytime soon, as I'm sure he still has a few more tricks up his sleeve.

You never want to speculate when these things occur in camp, but the tenor of the field was vastly different before and after Trice went down.

Part of the reason that Trice fell to the seventh round was his injury history, with some teams declaring him a medical red flag.

We can only hope for the best for the young man, as he was putting together a promising offseason and early start to camp.

Joey Porter Jr. Strikes Back

After taking one on the shins earlier in practice by way of George Pickens' miraculous catch, Joey Porter Jr. came roaring back, getting his own hands on the football for his first interception of camp.

Easily the best rookie on the field over the past week, Porter Jr. is only helping himself ease into the starting lineup with every rep.

Steelers Red-Zone Identity is Clear

An obvious statement to open the first padded practice of the season, Steelers RB Najee Harris plowed his way not once, but twice into the endzone for what was an emphatic start to "Seven shots."

Pittsburgh Clearly believes in establishing the run, and hopefully, the offensive line generates this kind of push against opposing defenses.

Elandon Roberts Is Here

While everyone was watching Pickens make highlight-reel catches, Elandon Roberts was "laying the wood" as we say in football, causing all sorts of havoc when the running backs and linebackers faced off.

He may not be the best coverage player in the world, but he showed the intensity and physicality that Pittsburgh desires as they rebuild their linebacker corps.

And that's a wrap on day five of training camp in Latrobe. The first day of full pads left a mark on what will begin the dog days of camp. Pittsburgh will have to sort out some injuries in the secondary but outside of that it was a great day for the team in totality.

The rookies showed the moment wasn't too bright, George Pickens is on his way to doing tremendous things, and the offense finally looked explosive.

So here's to seeing more of that over the coming days.
