Former Steelers All-Pro has massive influence on free-agent signee
Hopefully he emulates his play on the field.
The Steelers signed Nate Herbig earlier this week, hoping that he can function as a key depth piece with starter upside along the offensive line.
What they didn't know about Herbig, is just how much he loves former Steelers legend David DeCastro.
A couple of Stanford Cardinals, Herbig spoke about DeCastro's influence, and just how much it means to be a Steeler at his introductory press conference.
"Was there a time you remember maybe when you were younger when you started to learn about who the Steelers are? Anything you remember that stands out that formed that impression for you?"
Herbig replied:
"When I went to Stanford, David DeCastro was a Steeler. Great, a legend, and I just would watch his games on Sunday in the weight room. Just watching him out there dominating, that’s how I want to play football. I respect it. I want to be like him."
I would say that DeCastro is quite the person to emulate when you play offensive line, especially in Pittsburgh.
During his nine seasons in Pittsburgh, DeCastro attended six Pro Bowls and was voted to three All-Pro teams, including two first-team All-Pro nods.
Lofty goals no doubt, but even a smidgen of DeCastro-level play out of Herbig will enthuse Steeler nation.
