The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the business of adding useful pieces to the team, usually young in their career and on cheap deals. They will be doing that exact thing in just over two weeks, come draft weekend.
That's why the most recent news of the release of Jamir Jones is a little head-scratching.
Per the Pittsburgh Steelers official Twitter account, the team has officially released outside linebacker Jamir Jones.
Jones went undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2020, but was playing meaningful snaps in Pittsburgh once T.J. Watt went down with an injury last season.
With there being no need to trim the roster in the middle of April, and Jones on a minimal-level deal, some in the media think this release is part of a bigger play from the Steelers.
The truth is, this is merely a parting of ways for the upcoming draft. While I don't believe the Steelers have any "big plans" even if they did, the Steelers releasing Jones would have little impact on their ability to do so.
Now, what I do think is happening, is the planning of adding rookie talent on the edge, as early as the second round and likely throughout draft weekend into the priority free agent period for undrafted players.
But don't worry Steelers fans, Dupree could still return, and the team can add youthful depth in the draft, making everyone happy.
There's also the chance that Jamir Jones returns, now having familiarity on multiple stints with the franchise.
Regardless, here's to Jones landing on his feet, and helping a team in the league, even if they don't wear black and gold.
