Pittsburgh Steelers fans, for the most part, don't seem to be happy that Matt Canada will return as offensive coordinator in 2023.

At one point this season, it felt like Canada was in danger of being fired during the season — something Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin doesn't typically do.

Canada, however, was able to save his job thanks to the strong play of rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett down the stretch.

After reading some recent comments from The Athletic's Mark Kaboly, I'm even more surprised that Canada didn't get the boot after the 2022 season.

Kaboly, who covers Pittsburgh for The Athletic, was asked in his weekly mailbag about Canada and how he gets along with other coaches on the staff.

And Kaboly's answer was…troubling.

"I know a couple of assistants left because of the tough relationship with Canada and a couple didn’t want to come in and work with him," wrote Kaboly. "Take that for what it is. He works well with the coaches in place now. From the outside, I never saw or heard anything that suggested he was tough to work with."

Kaboly isn't slamming Canada as he acknowledges that he didn't see any issues from the outside. Plus he says Canada seems to work well with the coaches currently on staff.

But if coaches left because of Canada and/or refused to come to Pittsburgh because of him, that's an issue.

(Offensive line coach Adrian Klemm and wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard are two offensive coaches who didn't return after the 2021 season for what it's worth.)

And I'm not sure how Tomlin decided it was a good idea to bring him back.

I know there's the argument about continuity and not wanting Pickett to learn a new offense in his second season. And I certainly understand that. But it sounds like Canada might not be the best guy to lead the Steelers' offense. Good leaders don't run people off, they draw people in. And Canada is doing the opposite.

Tomlin isn't someone I usually question — his resumé speaks for itself. But it feels like he might be making a big mistake by bringing Canada back in 2023.
