The Steelers shelved out over $100 million dollars across seven different free-agent signings between last week and the time of this posting.
While the future of those signings is yet to be determined, we can (I did) make initial observations surrounding the 2023 Steelers free agent class.
The Pittsburgh faithful are sharing their feelings about the latest moves, and they aren't particularly excited.
Gambling.com has released a set of metrics that measures the amount of negativity that every NFL fanbase has displayed via social media, since the start of free agency.
Pittsburgh ranks 9th amongst the angriest of all fanbases, with an average level of negativity at 11%.
Most of the negative comments seemingly come from Reddit, as it accounted for nearly 21% of the negative comments compared to only 8% on Facebook and 5.7% on Twitter.
So what gives Steelers fans?
Does the Cole Holcomb signing not enthrall you?
What about the addition of future Hall of Famer Patrick Peterson? Still no.
I know what you really like…adding NFC champion guard Isaac Seumalo to sure up the offensive line.
All jokes aside, it's obvious as to why the Steelers fans are reacting with negativity.
The team has high standards, with anything short of a Super Bowl, often seen as a disappointment, no matter how lofty that notion is.
So when free agency comes around and the front office plays it safe instead of buying up all the big-name free agents, fans will naturally be upset with the teams lack of spending.
But that's the Steelers way. The team has always been built through the draft, with player development viewed as more important than player acquisition.
Perhaps most fans understand this, as evident by the reaction to Dan Orlovsky's latest comments on the Steelers.
Much of the fanbase views Beckham as too "flashy" or a bad locker room fit. While those may be false narratives, it speaks more to the idea that Steeler fans know how the front office works.
So it seems fans are upset with some of the signings in Pittsburgh, but they are also upset with the idea of adding big names.
Talk about having your cake and eating it too.
Trust the Pittsburgh process Steelers fans, it's worked to this point.
Let's just hope Omar Khan and the rest of the decision-makers stay off of Reddit.
