The biggest questions facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming out of the bye week surrounded the offense.

Could Baker Mayfield get back on track after inconsistent games against the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints? How will the offensive line look now that Luke Goedeke is in the fold? Can Rachaad White add some juice to the running game while Bucky Irving continues his recovery, and can Emeka Egbuka carry the passing attack as WR1?

Well, while the Bucs showed some promise in those areas, it wasn’t enough as they lost to the New England Patriots in Week 10.

Baker Mayfield and Co. can’t hold up their end of the bargain

The Bucs pulled within five points after Mayfield hit Tez Johnson in the end zone about midway through the third quarter. The defense got a stop and the offense got the ball back at the Bucs’ 43 on the next drive, but the offense mustered just eight net yards before punting it away.

Then, the defense held Drake Maye and Co. to a three-and-out on the next drive, and how did Mayfield and the offense respond? With a three-and-out of their own and another punt.

Maye proceeded to hit Mack Hollins for a 54-yard pass down to the Bucs’ eight on the Pats’ subsequent possession, but Bucs safety Tykee Smith stepped up and made a huge play by picking Maye off in the end zone to prevent any points from going on the board.

So, yet again, the Bucs defense gave Mayfield and the offense a third chance to take the lead, as Tampa Bay was still down by one possession.

And, of course, the offense couldn’t get the job done. The offense was able to get to the Patriots’ 27, but Mayfield was sacked on fourth and 3, which obviously ended the drive. TreyVeon Henderson ripped off another big touchdown run on the next drive to essentially put the game on ice.

Bucs have to get the offense figured out, or else they’re going to hit another in-season slump

The Bucs’ offense is officially a concern after a third-straight down performance. Sure, the unit looked good on the first drive of the game, but it took way too long to find the end zone after that, and Josh Grizzard’s crew once again just looked off.

Dropped passes, poor decisions, and bad execution in critical moments all weighed heavily into the loss. Sure, the defense had its own gaffes, but the point is, Todd Bowles’ defense had the offense in a spot where it could take the lead on multiple occasions, and the offense couldn’t get it done.

The Bucs now have the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams coming up, two teams that don’t play around on defense. After that, it’s a sneaky Arizona Cardinals defense, and then three of the final five games are against the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers defenses. While those two units have been inconsistent, they’ve flashed plenty throughout the season, and if the Bucs aren’t on their game, then those two defenses could make life hard on offense.

Regardless, the Bucs’ offense is officially holding the team back, and Grizzard is going to have to find a way to make it better.
