Mayfield injured his toe during Monday night's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs (8-0) and has missed the last two days of practice. It's a short week, however, so while that's not ideal, it could still be more of a strategy than it is the injury dictating the situation.
Sure enough, it does sound strategical. Per Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud, Mayfield "will be fine" according to the Bucs. It echoes what Mayfield said on Wednesday, however, players have said things like that before and end up missing the subsequent game. Hearing it elsewhere obviously lends more credence to the situation.
“A little sore but I’ll be good to go by Sunday," said Mayfield.
It goes without saying that the Bucs offense really can't stand to lose another key cog, especially its quarterback. The unit is already without Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Fortunately, Liam Coen has been able to string together effective game plans over the last couple of weeks that have kept the Bucs in their respective matchups.
The 49ers defense isn't the dominant unit we've seen over the last couple of years, as injuries have really taken their toll. At the same time, the secondary is tied for the fourth-most interceptions with 10 on the year, so the Bucs are going to need quality play from whomever is behind center and Mayfield obviously gives them the best chance of providing that.
