The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been a very fun team to watch this season in large part due to a career resurgence by quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield has been playing some of the best football of his career and is on pace for the best season of his career in all the areas that matter.
As many look back and try to figure out how this pairing came about to put the Bucs in a position to keep their playoff hopes alive without the presence of Tom Brady, it was also fair to ask why Mayfield chose Tampa. His answer today made perfect sense.
It does make perfect sense. Mayfield went to the team that had one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL.
This is as obvious a reason as any to join a team as you try to remake your image in the NFL, but it was different for Mayfield.
His play in Cleveland was often one of the few parts that was actually lifting the Browns' offense up. The Browns often won games because of Mayfield while still lacking even average weapons.
The Bucs offer Mayfield a different opportunity.
Tampa's weapons have the ability to uplift quarterbacks. That isn't to say that Mayfield doesn't have to play well, but this group is so talented that all the pressure isn't on the QB to make every play every single time.
This is new for Mayfield, and it has led to a situation where he and the rest of the offense are firing on all cylinders, and this has led to an electric 3-1 start.
Assuming everyone can keep going at their current pace, this is going to be a fun year for the Buccaneers, and Baker Mayfield is going to get paid.
Buccaneers define themselves in dominant Week 4 win
You can’t argue with those results.
