Baker Mayfield and the the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have started off slow, but a solid second half on offense was enough to put the team in the win column at the end of the day.
If there were questions about Mayfield after one half, most were answered with a quality showing in the second.
Mayfield started the game in a bit of a rough spot. 6/15 wasn't pretty at all, especially when coupled with some poor pre-snap reads and targets when it mattered.
However, Mayfield's final stat line of 21/34 for 173 yards and two touchdowns tell the story of a very good second half that speak to a decent upside for the new starter in Tampa.
Was it always perfect? No. But the final stat that matters, the number in the win column, is what matters. Mayfield delivered when it counted, and that is a big deal in Tampa.
That is what the Bucs can expect from Mayfield going forward. The deep ball may not come as often as it did with Tom Brady (even if he did look good on deep passes today), but the consistency is going to make up from the lack of volume.
Mayfield did plenty today to keep his job and extend his grace for another week. It may not have been flashy, but wins aren't anything to complain about for the Bucs in 2023.
As long as Mayfield keeps delivering like this, you can bet he is going to keep his job.
Buccaneers should get Baker Mayfield’s best in 2023
The Buccaneers are hoping Mayfield can bridge the gap from the Tom Brady era and so far, everything sounds plausible enough to work.
