‘We don’t any take s***’ – Baker Mayfield wants the NFL to know the Bucs aren’t playing around when it comes to winning games
The Bucs QB is as tough as they come and his teammates have the same mentality.
Baker Mayfield is as tough as they come.
He’s also one of the biggest smack-talkers in the NFL. Mayfield thrives off the game within the game and it’s a rarity if he doesn’t start jawing with at least one member of the opposition at some point.
We saw that in prime form against the Houston Texans whenever Chauncey Gardner-Johnson said whatever he said to activate Mayfield Mode. The star quarterback looked to be injured, but immediately sprung to life after CGJ’s comments, causing a scene that led to the internet running wild with it.
“We don’t take any s—“, Mayfield told reporters after Wednesday’s practice when he was asked what his mindset is like in those moments. “We’re always in the fight. It’s, I mean, anytime we step on the field, we expect to win, we expect to play well, and do our job at high level. It’s just the mentality.”
The Bucs have clawed and scratched their way to a 2-0 start while showing the grit and resiliency needed to win Super Bowls. Sure, they need to get healthy ASAP and try to avoid getting bitten even more than they already have by the injury bug, but it’s nearly impossible to not get excited from a mental toughness standpoint. This team clearly has that box checked and it’s going to come in handy more as the season marches on.
The whole team feeds off and embodies his mentality. When he’s on the field, the Buccaneers are a squad that will give any opponent all they can handle.
“It’s guys laying their body on the line,” said Mayfield. “That stuff screams off the tape. Guys, notice that and you know, might not say anything, but you nod your head like, ‘Okay, that’s the type of group we have.’
“We’re going to fight for each other and try and pick up each other when we’re down.”
It’s just yet another example of the culture that has been built in Tampa Bay since 2019 and when listening to Mayfield speak and seeing his words come to life on the field, it’s easy to see why this team is 2-0 and on track to win a fifth-straight NFC South title.
