The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 1-0. Is anyone else a little surprised?
It isn't like the Vikings were supposed to be that good, but the Bucs looking pretty decent on both sides of the ball after all the offseason departures and injuries was impressive.
Here are the biggest takeaways from the win to start the season off right:
This defense is legit.
If there is a better unit at creating turnovers in the NFL, you'd be hard-pressed to find them.
The Vikings have a good quarterback and one of the best skill players in the NFL and still had three turnovers against this defense while only posting 17 points.
The Bucs are going to be hard for any team to score points against. The secondary just has to work on not letting off the big plays.
The play-calling has gotten better.
There is still some growth that would help this team as a whole, but the sequencing of the offensive plays did look much better today than it did over the past few years.
The execution can absolutely be better, especially from Baker Mayfield in the first half, but Dave Canales did well to establish the pass to open up the run when it counted.
Also, the adjustments at half time were extremely beneficial in making a much easier second half for Baker Mayfield.
Which Baker Mayfield is going to show up for the rest of the year?
It was truly a game of two halves for Baker Mayfield. The first was awful. The second was good enough to get the Bucs to the playoffs.
Consistency has been the issue for Mayfield over his entire career, and trying to figure out how to replicate the second half while erasing the first half will be one of the most important adjustments for the Bucs during the week.
The rush-pass split hasn't changed
There were moments where the run looked decent, but don't fool yourself; this team will only win by throwing the ball early and often.
If Todd Bowles doesn't want to keep his job, he'll force the offense to run the ball more than it did today.
Buccaneers should get Baker Mayfield’s best in 2023
The Buccaneers are hoping Mayfield can bridge the gap from the Tom Brady era and so far, everything sounds plausible enough to work.
