For the second year in a row on February 1, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady has announced his retirement.
This time, however, Brady says it's for good.
The legendary quarterback posted a short 53-second video on social media on Wednesday morning announcing his retirement.
"I'll get to the point right away," said Brady. "I'm retiring. For good. I know the process was a pretty big deal last time. So when I woke up this morning, I figured I'd just press record and let you guys know first."
Brady's retirement video comes a year to the day that he announced his first "retirement", which lasted just 40 days.
According to NFL Network's Jeff Darlington, Brady told Tampa Bay at 6:00 AM on Wednesday morning that he was retiring.
Darlington noted that Brady had planned this offseason to either retire or return to the Bucs in 2023. It appears that playing for another franchise wasn't an option for the future Hall of Famer.
While Brady says this time his retirement is "for good", I think we all know that speculation around a potential return will linger all offseason until training camp starts later this summer.
I tend to think this is really it for Brady — after all, he'll be 46 later this year. But with competitors like Brady, you can never rule anything out. It'll be interesting to see if he leaves the door open for a potential return this offseason as he did during his brief retirement a year ago.
February 1, by the way, might need to be designated as "Tom Brady Day" from now on.
