There are a lot of players worth loving on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to a mix of personality and talent. History smiles on guys like Mike Evans and Davonte David, two players that have done everything at the highest level for a long time now, and the time is getting closer for a new generation of Bucs stars to take over the team.
The good news for the Buccaneers is that they have no shortage of young talent to carry the mantle going forward.
When it is all said and done, there probably isn't a better young face that is primed to become one of the faces of the franchise (if he isn't already only due to the presence of David on the defense) than Antoine Winfield Jr., and his bit of franchise history from the win on Sunday shows why.
There is little that shows Winfield's immediate star power for the Bucs more than the fact that he has just set the franchise record for most sacks by a Buccaneers safety over a career with 10.0.
Yes, you read that right.
It took Winfield three years and one game to set a record for the Bucs that he will assuredly keep building upon.
Good luck to the guy that tries to follow him. That is, if the Buccaneers can play their cards right and can find a way to keep Winfield.
Keeping Winfield seems like an obvious decision to Bucs fans, but the tight cap space for the team is going to struggle if Winfield keeps up his play from the win over the Vikings.
Winfield was the best player on the field. It wasn't particularly close. If he keeps playing like that, Winfield should be an obvious All-Pro, which will make him even harder to keep by the end of the year.
The Buccaneers are almost assuredly aware of this, and that is why they need to act quickly to make sure they can lock down their young star with a fast contract that shows just how much the franchise values him without letting the market reach a dangerous level.
Winfield has already set a franchise record on his rookie contract. Just imagine what will happen if the Bucs can keep him for another contract.
