Buccaneers bring in former No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield to play QB
The Buccaneers are giving Mayfield what is likely to be his last shot at starting in the NFL.
Tom Brady is no longer the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so many expected the 2020 Super Bowl champs to find a potential replacement in either free agency or the 2023 NFL Draft.
As free agency crept closer and closer, more and more people began to associate the Buccaneers and former No. 1 overall draft pick, Baker Mayfield. Mayfield has struggled over the last couple of seasons, but he still has the tools to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
Sure enough, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday that the Buccaneers reached an agreement with Mayfield on a one-year deal worth up to $8.5 million.
The initial amount comes off as "starter money", but Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer later reported that Mayfield's base salary is $4 million. The rest can be earned through incentives.
Therefore, Mayfield will come in and compete with former second-rounder Kyle Trask for the Buccaneers' starting quarterback position.
The post-Brady era has officially begun.
It'll be interesting to see what Mayfield can cook up with the Buccaneers.
