The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't get that much love when they first signed free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield was coming off some decent football in a reserve role for the Rams when their season was largely over, but the overall body of work had generally soured most of the NFL on the idea of Mayfield ever being a starter again.
Mayfield has since killed that idea while playing the best football of his career with the Buccaneers at 3-1 and at the top of their division.
After four games, Mayfield currently has 882 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and only two interceptions.
While total extrapolations don't always work, that is a pace for 3,749 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and all of that would be on something near 70% completion.
That would be the second-most passing yards of Mayfield career to go with the most touchdowns, the second-fewest interceptions, and the best completion percentage by nearly six percent.
This easily paces out to being the best season of Mayfield's career, and that was not what many people had on their radar for the Bucs this season.
Mayfield has been the best quarterback in the NFC South, so it isn't any surprise that the Bucs have been the best team in the NFC South.
Assuming this season keeps up, there is reason to believe this match could go on for a while longer, and the success that comes from having a quarterback playing at this level would keep the Bucs in a prime position to compete, especially as they shed more dead cap space over the next year.
The Bucs gambled by bringing in Mayfield and skipping over Kyle Trask, but that decision is paying off in the best way possible.
