When talking about the recent success of the Buccaneers drafting ability, the 2020 class immediately stands out. I mean, Tristan Wirfs is already one of the best linemen in the league, just two seasons removed from college.
According to Pro Football Focus, Wirfs allowed just two sacks last season, while finishing with an overall grade of 84.6, the sixth-highest grade of any offensive tackle.
They also drafted Antoine Winfield, who is emerging as a premier safety in the league. He and Kevin Byard are the only two safeties in football with an overall grade over 85.
Even the 2019 draft class was great. The Buccaneers walked away with a great linebacker in the first round in Devin White, who helped anchor a Super Bowl defense.
However, now that it has been a few years, it feels weird to say that the Buccaneers could have done even better in that draft.
Buccaneers get upgraded defensive front in PFF re-draft
The 2019 draft was stacked, to say the least. There was no shortage of great offensive and defensive talent. For the Buccaneers, they were in a stage where defense was needed badly.
With the fifth pick in the 2019 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select… Devin White, the linebacker from LSU.
Most of you remember that day.
White will be great. He could very well be a franchise centerpiece if he puts it all together. And let's not forget he's learning behind Lavonte David.
However, he was not necessarily the best player available when it came to the Buccaneers' turn to submit their pick. That would be Jeffrey Simmons, the defensive tackle from Mississippi State, who has been on a tear in Nashville.
Per PFF, they think the Buccaneers would be better off picking Simmons in the draft, looking back at it all. Here is why:
"This re-selection might be divisive. On one hand, the Bucs probably don't win their 2021 Super Bowl without Devin White. His speed and playmaking ability as a Blitzer and around the line of scrimmage were key parts of why Tampa Bay was able to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. On the other hand, was the individual return on investment of an off-ball linebacker at No. 5 the best choice? Adding the benefit of hindsight, I'd say no.
Trying to keep things somewhat realistic regarding what each team would have been looking at on draft night in 2019, the Bucs were just months away from moving on from Gerald McCoy, which means this draft was well before they acquired Ndamukong Suh. Drafting Simmons instead means they'd have the best young defensive line in football in 2022."
Just think of this: Simmons and Vita Vea would be absolutely unstoppable next to each other. No one would be able to block the Buccaneers defensive line. These two would easily represent the NFL's best defensive line duo.
It could've happened, too. Many regarded Simmons as a top-10 pick before he tore his ACL during pre-combine workouts. If that hadn't happened, there's a great chance the Buccaneers would've take him instead of White.
Even with Ndamukong Suh on the roster. Simmons could've taken it easy during his rookie year and then he could've replaced Suh in 2020 or even 2021.
Did the Buccaneers make the wrong decision? No. They did end up winning a Super Bowl and White was an integral piece in both the playoff run and the Super Bowl win.
But, at the same time, would Jefferey Simmons be fun to see in Tampa Bay? Absolutely.
Not for opposing offenses, though.
