Kyle Trask is starting his third season a little differently than he did the previous two.
Sure, he isn't playing behind, or learning from the greatest quarterback of all time anymore. And, obviously, there is the fact that he isn't competing for the backup job anymore, but now the starting job.
Heading into 2023, he will have an entirely new offensive system to learn and play in. With Dave Canales coming over as the new offensive coordinator, Trask has taken a liking to what the quarterback will do in this system as opposed to the Leftwich system.
"Our old scheme for the last couple of years is definitely more geared towards throwing from the pocket," Trask said to reporters. "This new scheme allows you to get outside the pocket and use your legs more. That's really exciting for me as a quarterback – anytime you get on the edge. It's really exciting to throw one on the run or get outside the pocket and make a play you know, run for a first down or something like that."
Canales offense will look similar to what Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams likes to do but not crazy similar. The concept is the same though – play action, and stretch the field horizontally instead of vertically.
Not only will it be something more fit for the quarterbacks the Buccaneers will be trotting out on the field in 2023, it will be something fresh and different. The fans will like it, as some started to get tired of an often times stagnant offense last season.
If Trask is happy and that giddy about the new offense, it must mean he is confident in it. He and Baker Mayfield will compete to see who will be the starting quarterback, but getting the best version of Trask yet is important.
