In 2023, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can have one underrated player enter his name into a whole new level, which will only make the team more fun to watch.
With no Tom Brady, there will be a lot fewer people watching the Buccaneers in 2023. They aren't expected to compete for a Super Bowl like they have been in the last few years. However, they can still be an exciting team to watch.
They have all of the pieces on defense to do just that. One guy who can help make the defense exciting and take his game to the next level is safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and one NFL analyst agrees.
Already heading into his fourth season, Winfield appears primed for a big season in the takeaway department. Winfield has just four interceptions in three seasons, but opposing quarterbacks have just a 67.3 passer rating targeting him. A Pro Bowler in 2021, Winfield had 80 tackles, six quarterback hits, four sacks, an interception, and three passes defended last season. He's in the conversation as one of the best young safeties in the game, but he has the opportunity to become one of the elite players at his position in 2023. –Jeff Kerr, CBS Sports
The Buccaneers have several guys on the defense that are exciting to watch. Sure, we don't know what will happen with Devin White, but assuming he stays with Tampa Bay, he is one of the best linebackers in the league, along with Lavonte David.
They have two of the top 30 cornerbacks in the league, Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean. They also have Vita Vea, one of the best defensive tackles in the league, and Calijah Kancey, the rookie defensive tackle.
Winfield is a guy that can make his name far more known around the league. He can insert himself into stardom. Winfield is heading into his fourth season and has seen some improvement every year in his career in at least one specific area.
In 2022, he had a pretty decent year. He finished with a PFF overall grade of 77.8. Winfield also finished with a run defense grade of 86.2 and a pass rush grade of 91.4. Winfield finished with the sixth most pass rush snaps of any safety, tallying 40. Winfield finished with the highest grade of the safeties with at least 20 pass rush snaps.
Even his coverage grade was solid. He could have been better in that area, but he wasn't terrible. His PFF grades, including his 66 coverage grade, can improve in 2023. He is a safety who can do some of everything, which will catch some eyes in 2023.
