TAMPA BAY – NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday morning that the Buccaneers are picking up Devin White's fifth-year option. The deadline to do so was May 2, which is the upcoming Monday.
Pewter Report's Scott Reynolds reported the Buccaneers intended to pick up White's fifth-year option back in February, so this isn't much of a surprise. The Buccaneers think very highly of White and he's a key part of the defense. He also has a rare skillset that most inside linebackers in the NFL don't possess and he's been a team captain the last two years.
White's fifth-year option amounts to $11,706,000 in 2023. It's a nice raise from the $7.4 million per year average over the first four years of his career.
But, obviously, the big goal is a second contract. If White can continue the trajectory he's on and improve his coverage game, then he'll certainly be in line for a big payday and he'll likely see it very soon.
