Not that it’s ever right to celebrate someone losing their job, but it is worth acknowledging when a franchise makes the right decision.
That is what happened today when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived running back, Ke’Shawn Vaughn.
This was a move that most fans saw coming for a while now, and while it doesn’t make any crazy changes in the short term, it was still the right decision for the Buccaneers.
Vaughn’s career has certainly not lived up to the lofty expectations that were created by the Buccaneers drafting him in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft (two rounds higher than he should’ve been taken). Vaughn was always the type of player that you had to talk yourself into in the early days, but his product has simply not been good enough for an NFL back.
Vaughn ends his time in Tampa never even sniffing the starting role and his play last year was bad enough to end his time earlier if this coaching staff was better at evaluating talent. The running back room was wide open this year and Vaughn ending his time on the inactive list tells you everything you need to know.
The Buccaneers didn’t need to do anything crazy, they don’t even have to sign another running back at this point. The room has been Rachaad White from the jump and Vaughn is just one of three other backs that hasn’t been able to supplant him. Vaughn was simply taking up a roster spot with no chance of making it back on the field or making an impact.
Bucs fans can appreciate Vaughn for being a part of a Super Bowl team and for a couple of special plays, but this move was always a stretch for Tampa, and this much like the Todd Bowles situation is just another example of the franchise waiting too long to rip off the bandaid.
Buccaneers alive in playoff race after Week 13 win
Still rolling ahead, somehow.
