Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady are good friends. Best friends, even.
But even Brady's mid-March decision to return to football surprised Gronkowski. And that's because Gronkowski didn't think Brady would return until the 2023 season, at the earliest.
"It was just incredible that he even retired," Gronk told TMZ. "I knew he was going to come back, but I didn't think he was going to come back this year, to tell you the truth. I thought he was going to come back in like, a year, you know? …
"I just didn't think it was going to be that soon, but I'm glad to see him back."
That's a rather interesting revelation on Gronk's side of the matter. Brady showed no signs of slowing down in 2021, so it's not out of the question he could take a year off and pick up where he left off. However, at the same time, he will be 46-years-old when the 2023 starts. There's plenty of room to debate how much taking a year off would affect his play.
But what makes it even more intriguing is Gronkowski's and Brady's relationship. As I mentioned earlier, they're very close. Gronkowski doesn't have to speculate when it comes to what Brady has in mind. He can go directly to the source.
So it's fair to wonder what Brady told Gronk over the course of those 40 days or during the time leading up to his decision to return. Gronkowski listed Brady's desire to be with his family as a possible reason why he would take a year off and that lines up with what Brady said publicly.
However, it's hard to suppress the suspicion that Brady told Gronk something that made him think he wouldn't be back until 2023.
Regardless, Brady is back. And that's all that matters.
And according to Gronk, he's far from done.
"He's not done, man. The guy's 44, and let me tell you, the guy doesn't look a day over 23 when he's throwing the football around. It's just incredible [how] he just slings it and [how] it's always right on the money. … He still has it. No doubt about that."
