The Tampa Bay Buccaneers experienced a very scary moment with running backs coach Skip Peete on Wednesday.

Per Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud, paramedics were dispatched to the Bucs’ indoor training facility in order to attend to Peete. The situation deescalated, but Peete was taken to a nearby hospital. He was alert and awake, per Stroud.

The Bucs later released a statement updating the situation.

“During this morning’s walk-through practice, running backs coach Skip Peete experienced a medical episode. He was attended to by team medical personnel and was responsive, coherent, and in stable condition prior to being transported off site for further medical evaluations. Additional updates will be provided as they become available.” – Tampa Bay Buccaneers PR

Todd Bowles told reporters after practice that Peete is coherent and doing fine. Doctors are running tests on him and it sounds like, per Bowles, the main issue was dehydration, though no one at the press conference followed up for clarity.

People often forget that football is more than just a game. These are real-life people with families and the same cares, needs, and wants as anyone else in the world. In terms of a Bucs vacuum, most of these guys are around each other for extended periods of time on a daily basis. And if they’re not, they at least see one another enough to where they have some kind of relationship.

“It’s definitely scary,” Mayfield told reporters. “Luckily, he was alert after kind of making some jokes. So that’s good, but in the moment, it’s much bigger than the game of football. Especially, you know, when you come into work every day with teammates, coaching staff, [and] everybody in the building; when something like that happens [with] somebody close to you, it puts things in perspective.”

It’s good to hear that things are moving in the right direction with Peete. Hopefully he’ll get back on his feet sooner than later and can put this behind him.
