Buccaneers Coaching Search Tracker: The hunt for Baker Mayfield’s next play-caller is underway
The Bucs are prioritizing the OC search, as they should.
Todd Bowles is used to offseason coaching searches as the head honcho of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but this year is much, much different due to the fact he’s looking to replace five assistants this time around.
Two of those vacancies are the offensive coordinator and special teams coordinator positions, as well. While each spot is important, those two obviously carry a lot more weight and Bowles must be diligent when picking his guys, as I’m sure he will be.
Regardless, there’s going to be a lot to monitor over the next few days and even weeks, so I wanted to go ahead and create a tracker in order to keep all of the information in one easy place to find.
Below are the candidates the Bucs have spoken with so far.
Offensive coordinator
- Detriot Lions passing game coordinator David Shaw (virtual)
- Arizona Cardinals quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork (virtual)
- Former Titans head coach Brian Callahan (virtual)
- Former Atlanta Falcons OC Zac Robinson (virtual)
- Former Giants interim HC Mike Kafka (virtual)
- Former Ravens OC Todd Monken (in person)
- Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel (in person)
- Bengals offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher (virtual)
The Buccaneers are finalizing a deal with Zac Robinson after a late-night visit on Wednesday. They also expect him to bring in Ken Zampese and T.J. Yates. The former was a senior offensive assistant with the Falcons the last two years while Yates served a variety of roles, the last being passing game coordinator in 2025.
Special teams coordinator
- Lions special teams assistant coordinator Jett Modkins (virtual)
- Former Dolphins special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman (virtual)
- Former Ravens assistant special teams coordinator Anthony Levine Sr. (virtual)
- Eagles special teams coordinator Michael Clay (virtual)
- Former Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith
The Buccaneers hired former Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith on Tuesday.
Defensive line coach
The Buccaneers have not interviewed anyone to replace former defensive line coach Charlie Strong.
Cornerbacks coach
No one has been interviewed to replace Kevin Ross, yet. The Bucs may also need to find someone to replace Nick Rapone, although they did move the entire secondary into one room last season, so it remains to be seen how that shakes out.
Quarterbacks coach
Finally, no one has been interviewed for Thad Lewis’ vacancy yet, either. It makes sense for the Bucs to find their OC before hiring a quarterbacks coach, so that’s probably how this timeline will shake out.
