Bucs took a swing at adding a huge name to their coaching staff, but the chances look dim
It looks like the Bucs won’t be adding an accomplished coach who recently became available.
The Buffalo Bills made some waves when they fired head coach Sean McDermott after the Bills’ 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round. The move was a bit of a surprise, given the annual contenders the Bills have been in the AFC.
However, with that bell being rung, what’s next for McDermott is all that’s relevant at this point. And, according to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers inquired about bringing him aboard to join Todd Bowles’ staff.
However, per Auman, McDermott is expected to take the year off and re-evaluate his options after next season.
Bucs inquired about adding former Bills HC Sean McDermott to their staff, but it appears unlikely to happen
The Bucs need as many ideas and voices as possible on the defensive side of the ball as they look to shore up a unit that was far took leaky for the talent level on the roster. And McDermott has plenty of experience in that arena.
He coached in Philadelphia from 2001-10, working with standouts like Brian Dawkins and Quintin Mikell as defensive backs coach later in his tenure there. He later served as defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, who went 15-1 on their way to the Super Bowl in 2015.
His next stop after 2016 was the Bills’ head coaching job, which he held for nine seasons. He posted a 98-50 record regular season mark (.662), but just an 8-8 mark in the postseason, which was obviously his downfall.
As Auman notes, Jason Licht and McDermott were together in Philadelphia for five seasons, and McDermott interviewed for the Tampa Bay head coaching position in 2016, so there’s some familiarity there with him and Licht.
We’ll see if McDermott changes his mind at some point over the next several months, but for the time being, it looks like Tampa Bay will have to look elsewhere to add some help to their staff before a crucial 2026 season for Bowles and the Bucs.
