You don't have to be bad at math like me to know that the majority of those guys won't make the final roster come cutdown day. The players know this, as well, which is why this competition should be a fun one to watch as training camp plays out.

Three Bucs Players Fighting for Backup Jobs at Inside Linebacker

K.J. Britt

Britt is easily the most experienced linebacker behind the starters, but that doesn’t mean his job is safe heading into camp.

Britt hasn't really flashed much when he's played on defense, but he's really carved out a nice role on special teams and the Bucs coaches view him as one of their better players on the unit.

That in itself holds a lot of weight. Effective special teams players can become roster mainstays in the NFL and the team retained special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong during the offseason, so it's not like Britt has to prove himself to anyone.

Still, as we are about to discuss, there are two very promising rookies that can usurp Britt if he slips too much during camp. The job is his to lose, but that's just the thing – he can lose it if he gets showed up.

SirVocea Dennis

The first rookie competing for a backup job is Dennis, the fifth-rounder out of Pitt that is also the college teammate of first-round rookie, Calijah Kancey.

Dennis has had a good offseason, so far. He's flashed the skills the Bucs saw on tape that led to his selection and he's made some impact plays during practice, such as his pick-six of Kyle Trask a few weeks ago.

The key with Dennis is he's a very smart, instinctual player. Those two traits are two of the most important to have at his position and they can certainly propel him to ILB3 if he continues to flash over the next two months.

Jeremy Banks

Don’t let Banks’ undrafted status fool you. The only reason he went undrafted is because of character concerns that stem from multiple instances during his time with the Tennessee Volunteers.

He is a violent, downhill player that loves contact and he has the sideline-to-sideline range that Bowles likes in his ILBs. Banks played the WILL position at Tennessee, which took advantage of his fast, hard-charging style of play.

But, as we all know with White, aggressiveness can lead to mistakes if it's not controlled or reined in. Outside of the character concerns, that was Banks' biggest problem: his overaggressiveness.

If Banks can tamper down that negative and show that the character stuff is a thing of the past, then it won't be a surprise to see his name on the final 53.

It's pretty much a three-man race for the two backup spots and the main contenders are Britt, Dennis, and Banks. There are two more players competing in Ulysees Gilbert and J.J. Russell, but their respective hills are going to be much, much harder to climb. That doesn't mean they're without hope, but ultimately it'll come to down the first three players mentioned in this paragraph.

The competition will be a fierce one and it should come right down to the wire – making it all the more exciting as the weeks pass.
