The Emeka Egbuka hype train has been rolling along all offseason and it took a big step toward turning into reality during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Tennessee Titans joint practice session on Thursday.

Egbuka immediately got off to a hot start by making two big catches downfield. One was a nice grab down the sideline, but the big highlight came when he roasted Titans cornerback Clarence Lewis for a deep touchdown pass.

Egbuka’s progress is such a relief for the Bucs’ passing attack, because there is uncertainty surrounding Chris Godwin’s Week 1 status and even beyond that. He’s yet to practice all offseason long and while he’s staying shape, he’ll have to ramp up and get into some sort of “football shape” before he’s ready for game action. He could experience a setback if he’s rushed too quickly and then the Bucs are back at square one, potentially.

There were a lot of comparisons in terms of how Egbuka and Godwin can be used in similar fashion when discussing their respective roles on offense and that allows the passing game to do what it does best. Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard won’t have to change anything or put guys in a spot that may not be the best for them. Therefore, the ceiling, while not as high as it’d be with both guys on the field at the same time, is still high enough to warrant a Top-10 attack.

Either way, it’s safe to say that we should continue to expect these kinds of plays from Egbuka over these last training camp practices and into the preseason. I’m sure the Bucs are hoping they continue into the regular season -and beyond- as well.
