Mike Evans’ plan becomes clearer on the eve of free agency
The Bucs legend will take a close look at what’s out there for him around the league.
There’s been a lot of speculation around Mike Evans entering the 2026 offseason. Will the Tampa Bay Buccaneer legend and future Pro Football Hall of Famer continue the pursuit of his second Super Bowl championship in the city that drafted him, or will he pursue another opportunity elsewhere?
No one’s really had a good public stance on that, as Evans and his camp have played things close to the vest. However, it appears as though Evans will indeed take a close look at what’s out there for him.
Per multiple outlets citing his agent, Evans will test the free agency waters this week.
Mike Evans to test the free agency market next week, according to his agent
I suppose there are two ways to look at this. Naturally, anything from an agent has to be taken with at least some type of a grain of salt. They have an agenda, and smokescreens and leverage are tricks of the trade.
But Evans is also surely interested to know just how green the grass could be on the other side of the fence, both monetarily and as far as opportunity to win. What plans they’d have to utilize him and how they’d convince him they’re on the doorstep to get to Super Bowl LXI and win it.
It remains to be seen who that best opportunity would come from. Buffalo — who is one of the more cap-strapped teams in the league — seemed like an option until they traded for DJ Moore. San Francisco, Washington, and New England also seem like roster fits with significant salary cap space.
The legal tampering period for NFL free agency begins on Monday at noon, so teams can officially reach out then to players’ agents and begin negotiations for deals. And it looks like Deryk Gilmore’s phone will be active regarding the Bucs’ superstar.
