Today was supposed to be a happier day for the Seattle Seahawks.
After playing well over the first half of the season, dominating on defense in October, and securing the top spot in the NFC West after the 49ers started to slip, a game against the Baltimore Ravens, one of the better teams in the league, was supposed to be the perfect test of the playoff capabilities of this franchise.
The results did not impress.
After a slow first quarter where it looked like Seattle was going to have a chance to keep the game close and slow Baltimore down, the flood gates opened up.
The Ravens scored 17 points in the second quarter and never looked back.
Baltimore went on to dominate for the rest of the game, scoring a total of 37 points and holding the Seahawks, one of the best teams in the league coming into today, to just three.
This shouldn't have been on anyone's radar prior to today, but now that it is, it does pose some questions about the Seahawks' legs in the playoff race.
Seattle should absolutely make the playoffs based on the landscape of the NFC and their current positioning, but how far will this team go? Was today a fluke?
These are both fair questions.
While this was a bad loss on one of the better tests this season, the Seahawks should still have time to cement their identity and prepare for their end-of-season run.
With plenty of games coming up, including two against the 49ers, there is still plenty of time for the division to play out on its own.
However, there is a bit of added pressure on this team now against its better opponents. After losing to the Bengals and Ravens specifically, the Seahawks at least need some closer games against the likely playoff teams remaining on their schedule.
Nothing is over yet, this should hopefully just light a fire under Seattle to get right and not let it happen again.
