It appears as though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are doing their due diligence on an area of roster concern that Todd Bowles acknowledged this week.
Per The Draft Network's Ryan Fowler, the Bucs are bringing in East Carolina CB Shavon Revel, Jr. for a top 30 visit. Fowler notes that Tampa Bay will meet with Revel, Jr. from April 12-13
Revel, Jr. is an interesting prospect in that he brings a lot of talent, but a significant question mark as well: health. The ECU corner suffered a torn ACL back in September that ended his college career.
That being said, Revel, Jr. has a lot to like in both his physical makeup and what he's done on the field. At 6'2", 195 pounds and with an almost 80-inch wingspan, he's got a plus frame for the position. He obviously didn't run as he recovers from a torn ACL, but his speed on film isn't a concern.
Revel, Jr. more than held his own in coverage in his three years with the Pirates. Going back to the start of his last full season in 2023, he held opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of 57.1 when targeting him, allowing just 42% of the passes thrown his way to be completed with a Pro Football Focus cover grade of 90.5.
There's little doubt that Revel, Jr. will go in the first round; it's just a matter of where. If the Bucs were to pull the trigger, they'd be taking him on to start on day one, which would likely mean Jamel Dean's time in Tampa Bay would be over. After all, it would be hard to justify paying Dean top dollar to stand on the sideline most of the time, whereas they could clear his $13 million by trading or releasing Dean after June 1.
Regardless, the Bucs have to get better as a group at the cornerback spot. We'll see soon enough if the Bucs think Revel, Jr. is someone who can help them do that – if he's available when they're on the clock later this month.
