The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been desperately missing the play of second-year linebacker SirVocea Dennis.

It appears they won't be getting him back any time soon.

Todd Bowles announced on Wednesday that Dennis is likely done for the regular season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Dennis suffered a shoulder injury during the Buccaneers' Week 4 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.  The team placed him on injured reserve, with Todd Bowles noting three weeks ago that Dennis had "hurt it pretty bad" against Philadelphia.

As it turns it, he certainly did, and now the hope for the Buccaneers' talented young defender to return and give a much-needed boost to the middle of the defense is pretty much gone.

With Dennis out, K.J. Britt has struggled mightily.  Out of 142 linebackers graded by Pro Football Focus, Britt has a coverage grade of 37.6, ranked 129th.  His 36.2 overall grade is second worst on the entire team and worst among all starters.  Per PFF, he's allowed 16 of 20 catches to receivers he's covered for 184 yards, with 114 yards coming after the catch.  The numbers certainly match what the eyeballs have witnessed: that the drop off in coverage from Dennis has been like driving off a cliff.

The trade deadline is approaching, but with the Chris Godwin suffering a likely season-ending ankle injury and Mike Evans out for weeks, the team may be more inclined to seek help there first, even if Bowles is saying they like the guys they have.  It could be time to see what the team has in backup J.J. Russell, because what they're getting right now from Britt simply isn't good enough.
