The Tampa Bay Buccaneers helped put New York Giants QB Daniel Jones on the NFL map back in September 2019. Now, it appears they won't be facing the first round pick out of Duke when the teams meet on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Per ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Giants are benching their embattled QB in favor of backup Tommy DeVito this week.
Jones had a breakout party against the Buccaneers in 2019, sparking a second half comeback from a 28-10 deficit to win 32-31 after Matt Gay missed a chip shot field goal at the gun.
However, since then, it's mostly been downhill for Jones in the Big Apple, who's underwhelmed for the majority of his career. Aside from a run to the divisional round in 2022, Jones and the Giants have failed to win more than 6 games in any season during Jones' tenure. The Bucs managed to gain revenge for the 2019 collapse, getting past the Jones-led Giants 25-23 at MetLife Stadium in 2020 and rolling 30-10 at Raymond James Stadium in 2021.
The Bucs will now have to deal with DeVito, who was able to lead the Giants to a 3-3 record last season during his time as starter. DeVito's best game came in a 31-19 win over Washington, where he completed 18 of 26 passing attempts for 246 yards with 3 touchdowns. However, Washington sacked DeVito 9 times that game. That being said, DeVito has good scrambling ability, as evidenced by his 10 rushes for 71 yards in the Giants' 24-22 win over the Green Bay Packers.
In six games, DeVito completed 64% of his passes for 1101 yards with 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, adding 195 rushing yards and a score as well.
Now, Todd Bowles and his staff will have a full week to figure out how to stop the second-year undrafted free agent in a game the Buccaneers absolutely have to win if they're going to get back into the playoff race.
Bucs are breathing a huge sigh of relief after Tristan Wirfs’ latest injury update
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-6) have been riddled with injuries to key players all season long and star left tackle Tristan Wirfs is the latest name added to the list. Wirfs injured his MCL during Sunday's 23-20 loss to the San Francisco 49ers (5-4) and had to leave the game early. At the time, NFL […]
