Tyreek Hill is never one to shy away from telling you how he feels. On Wednesday, his feelings about Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield came out, and it was eye-raising.
Hill was asked about what he considers to be his top five QBs in the league, and Mayfield's name was surprisingly on the list.
"Top five quarterbacks in the league," Hill responded to a question. "Patrick (Mahomes), Tua (Tagovailoa), Lamar (Jackson), Dak (Prescott), Baker Mayfield."
Hill's first two answers certainly aren't surprising. Patrick Mahomes is unquestionably the best QB in the league right now. Tagovailoa is his quarterback, who's done an admirable job getting him the ball over the last two seasons. Lamar Jackson is the reigning MVP. Dak has been one of the best QBs in the NFC for years.
But Baker, that's certainly a choice. Could Hill be joking? It's possible. Trolling on social media and/or saying something wild or off the cuff is nothing that would be a surprise for him to do.
However, Mayfield also had one of the most impressive seasons in the league last year, particularly from where he came from. Career highs in completion percentage, passing yards, and touchdown passes helped bring the Bucs back from a 4-7 record to win the NFC South for the third straight season. He also earned Pro Bowl honors in the process.
Mayfield unquestionably surprised some people in a good way last season. However, he'll have to do something he hasn't really done so far in his career: put two strong seasons together. Fortunately, he'll have Mike Evans back to target downfield and a major upgrade in the man snapping him the ball in rookie center Graham Barton. His former offensive coordinator from the Rams Liam Coen will also be calling plays.
As such, there could be the opportunity for Mayfield to have another memorable season for the pewter and red in 2024. And perhaps show that Hill's words aren't really a laughing matter after all.
