The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have at least one more year to win a Super Bowl with Tom Brady. So, it's easy to see why the window is closing, and closing quickly.
The city of Tampa Bay has coined the name "Champa Bay" as of late, and rightfully so. The city wins it all, in whatever sport it is. I mean, the Tampa Bay Lightning just got done with their third straight appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals after winning the previous two.
The Buccaneers felt something similar to that in 2020 when they won the Super Bowl over the Kansas City Chiefs. To feel that again, a few things need to happen. For starters, they need a few key players to be "as advertised" (that aren't Tom Brady) in 2022.
Buccaneers need three players to produce as expected in 2022
1. Ryan Jensen
Ryan Jensen had a good year last season. He allowed the ninth-lowest pressure rate among centers in the league, according to PFF. His grade stood at 68.3 overall for the 2021 season.
As a result, he made the first Pro Bowl of his career.
Outside of Jensen, the Buccaneers have reshaped the interior offensive line. Gone are Ali Marpet and Alex Cappa. In are Shaq Mason and either rookie Luke Goedeke, second-year player Robert Hainsey, veteran Aaron Stinnie, or backup Nick Leverett.
The Buccaneers need Jensen to be the mainstay that he's been for the last three seasons. He'll play a big role in helping the interior offensive line gelling and keeping up the standard we've seen the last two seasons.
And of course, Jensen brings an unrivaled ability to set the tone while getting under opposing defenders' skin. That alone is something that must be "as advertised" in 2022.
2. Shaq Barrett
Shaq Barrett hasn't quite reached 20 sacks again since 2019, but he hasn't had a bad season since then, either. In fact, according to PFF, Barrett has never graded below a 74 in a season. Last season he finished with an 81.0 grade despite having 11 sacks. Barrett still generated 76 total pressures, which has been something he's always been great at.
With Jason Pierre-Paul all but out of the picture, the Buccaneers need Barrett to continue to his Pro Bowl-level play. Second-year player Joe Tryon-Shoyinka showed plenty of flashes in 2021, but it remains to be seen how he handles a full-time role. EDGE3 Anthony Nelson had a career year last year, but he needs to show he can continue to improve. Or at least stay consistent.
All of that puts more pressure on Barrett to perform. The Buccaneers need him to perform in case JTS and/or Nelson (not to forget Cam Gil, either) take a step back or fail to take a step forward.
Then, you add on the fact that in 2023, Barrett will count $21 million against the cap that includes over $14 million in base salary, it becomes even more clear that Barrett needs to be the sack machine the Buccaneers have grown accustomed to over the last three seasons.
3. Cameron Brate
With Rob Gronkowski officially retiring, at least that's what the story is, for now, Brate's role will be much bigger than it was last season. Not to mention O.J. Howard is now on the Buffalo Bills.
Brate did not have a great year last season. According to Pro Football Focus, he finished with an overall grade of 57.2, a pass-catching grade of 57.8, a pass-blocking grade of 48.3, and a run-blocking grade of 52.7. All of those numbers have been much better before in his career. Brate needs to be better than that.
No one has seen rookie Cade Otton practice in any kind of capacity due to last year's ankle injury and with all due respect, it's hard to see Ko Kieft making a major impact in the passing game in 2022. The Buccaneers need Brate to dig deep and play as close to his 2016-2017 form as possible this year.
