Bruce Arians announced on Wednesday evening that he's stepping down as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach.

Arians, who will turn 70 this fall, is moving into a front-office role with the Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles was immediately named the Buccaneers' new head coach.

Arians chose to step down now instead of after the 2022 season so Bowles would inherit a good situation (Tom Brady returning, plus Tampa Bay re-signing several key free agents).

Bowles previously served as the head coach of the New York Jets from 2015 to 2018.

Arians' decision to retire seemingly came out of nowhere on Wednesday. But it was a move that had been in the works for several days.

In fact, Bowles found out on Monday about Arians' plan and his promotion to head coach.

It's actually remarkable that Tampa Bay knew for two days that Arians was stepping down and Bowles would be promoted and no one leaked it to the media. It's rare that something like this can be kept under wraps.

Really, the plan had somewhat been in motion since Brady announced his return. The timing just didn't work out for Arians until this week.

It seems like there's never a quiet day in the NFL. There truly is no offseason.
