The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to place the franchise tag on wide receiver Chris Godwin on Tuesday for the second straight year.
There's a chance, however, that they might not have to use the tag on the veteran wide receiver.
ESPN's Dianna Russini reported on Tuesday morning that Tampa Bay is working on a long-term extension for Godwin and it could "come down to the wire".
"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently working on a long-term contract for receiver Chris Godwin," tweeted Russini. "If a deal is not struck between the two sides by 4 pm today, expect Tampa Bay to tag him for the second consecutive year, per sources."
The deadline for applying the franchise tag is 4 PM ET.
If the Buccaneers can get a long-term deal worked out with Godwin, it could allow them to pivot and place the franchise tag on cornerback Carlton Davis. That would give the franchise some added time to work out an extension with the 25-year-old former Auburn cornerback.
Godwin, by the way, is recovering from a torn ACL, which likely makes these long-term negotiations a bit tricky.
