Things weren’t looking particularly clean, or efficient, or promising for the Tennessee Titans through the first quarter of their Week 2 home opener. The Los Angeles Rams had given them a lot of trouble, particularly with their elite defensive front. And frustratingly, the Titans had given themselves plenty of trouble on top of it.

But then the offensive finally strung together a successful drive. Two first downs got them inside the Rams’ 40 yard line. Then on 3rd & 6, Cam Ward hit Elic Ayomanor up the right sideline for a ridiculous helmet catch and another first down. Would it have stood up to a challenge? Perhaps not. But we’ll never know, because Brian Callahan didn’t fool around with getting yards taken away by his opponent’s red challenge flag like we saw so much in Week 1. They practically wasted that next 1st down play in an effort to get the snap off in a hurry.

Then Ward and Ayomanor connected again, in what was the play of the game. It broke all the rules, it worked anyways, and the internet couldn’t get enough of it.

Cam Ward Defies The Rules

Quarterbacks are taught from the time they’re literal children not to throw back across their body while they’re on the run, rolling in the opposite direction. It’s practically impossible to do accurately. It’s an extremely easy way to put the ball in harm’s way. It’s just a dumb idea, and that’s why it’s taught as a cardinal rule of quarterbacking: Don’t. Do it.

One thing Cam Ward has made crystal clear in his career so far is that he does not care. He’s going to try it anyways. And it’s how he got his first career touchdown in the NFL.

Next Gen Stats was all over the play, and some really ridiculous numbers were shared quickly on social media:

The Titans have provided a lot of reasons for frustration and sadness so far in 2025. But the youth, they are our future. The young guys on this team look like the light at the end of the tunnel, and Cam Ward to Elic Ayomanor looks like a connection we’re going to get to enjoy in Tennessee for a long time. The internet’s reaction to Ward’s first touchdown reinforces that feeling.

The Internet Reacts To Ward’s First Touchdown

My friend Marcus Whitman said it best: that kind of creation ability is exactly why you draft Cam Ward first overall.

You can count on one hand the number of guys in the league who can get away with this kind of thing. Cam’s done this a number of times already since joining the team in the spring. I still worry that he could learn the wrong lesson eventually, because this is still a very dangerous and objectively silly idea. Just because you clearly can, doesn’t mean you always should! It’s going to bite him eventually.

But hey, until then… there’s not much I can say! The celebrations will continue apace until that day comes that it does finally bite him. If you’re getting away with it, you’re getting away with it! Here’s a collection of other reactions from X to give you a quick hit of dopamine after an otherwise frustrating loss:

Ward, and Ayomanor, and Dike, and Helm have all flashed on offense. These guys are making plays. Somebody, please help them.
