Cam Ward Injury Update: When the Titans’ QB returns to throwing, and what he’s been focused on in the meantime
The Tennessee Titans’ QB1 is planning on working out his injured throwing arm again soon.
Cam Ward was on the brink of a clean rookie season of health. Then in Week 18 against the Jaguars, he got crunched hard on a scramble for the endzone on his first drive of the game. He fell directly on his right shoulder, went swiftly to the locker room, and when he emerged he was in street clothes. The Titans ruled him out with what we learned was an AC joint sprain.
Reporting that day indicated he was initially diagnosed as a Grade 3 sprain, which carried with it the risk of needing surgery. The next day during locker cleanout, the team confirmed that he would not be needing surgery and that his scans once they arrived back in Nashville were a promising relief. No confirmation on the grade of his injury was ever given.
Since that week, we’ve heard relatively little about how the Titans’ QB has been doing. But just in time for the NFL Combine, a new report has given us a timeline on when he plans on throwing again.
Cam Ward will begin throwing again in March
Cameron Wolfe shared this update on Ward on NFL Network last week:
“Cam Ward is recovering well from his right shoulder AC sprain. I’m told he worked with his quarterback coach, Darryl Colbert Jr. This past week working on lower body work. They haven’t thrown the ball yet. The plan is for March, in about two or three weeks, for him to resume throwing the ball. Colbert said they’re working on his base. He told me they’re trying to get back from some of the bad habits he picked up last year with some of the struggles they had offensively, some of the pressure he had on him. They want to get his feet back right, get that base right for when he can throw.”
Ward himself told us on locker cleanout day that he would be emphasizing his lower body this offseason, and that his injury wasn’t going to push back his offseason plans in any way.
“Doesn’t push it back at all,” Ward said. “I’m working on my base, on my mechanics. I’m not throwing, I’m changing my throwing motion. So, the timetable for what I have set to get to mechanically, what I need to do is still on schedule.”
New offensive coordinator Brian Daboll told us last week that Cam had been around the building lately, doing rehab.
And in case you were wondering what the starting QB was up to in his free time, he made an appearance at a Topps football card “Rip Night” at the Cool Springs location of Nashcards on Saturday afternoon.
Titans fans will pay close attention all offseason to make sure their QB1 is ready to roll in the fall.
