The Tennessee Titans waived Xavier Restrepo on Tuesday afternoon before the roster cutdown deadline, sending the NFL world into a bit of a outsized tizzy as far as UDFA cuts go. That’s because Restrepo isn’t your typical UDFA. He was a fan favorite from his hyper-productivity in college at Miami, and was expected to be drafted much higher than he ended up going (which, was undrafted). He’s also 1st overall pick QB Cam Ward’s good friend, and the human interest element of them being reunited in Tennessee has been a popular story.

Ward went on the Bussin With the Boys podcast with former Titans Taylor Lewan and Will Compton which aired Tuesday morning, and he shared yet another anecdote about Restrepo’s utility to him and this Titans team. Compton asked him the ways in which he’s studying to learn the Titans playbook inside and out, and Ward explained how he’s had some help:

“I would say every way is my style… Because on tape it’ll show you the play call as well. And then I’d say the biggest thing, I have just whoever I’m with, even (Xavier) Restrepo, he’d be up here with me, some of the other receivers too, they would read the play to me and I tell them only read it once so I’ve got to remember it the first time. Because whoever is calling it in practice, coach Nick (Holz) or coach Callahan, they always read it twice. But I think just having to hear it once from whoever I’m around and then saying it again, I think that’s the biggest way I learned to just spit out the play call fast and then just get rolling.”

Restrepo and Ward’s bond is the reason Xavier came to Tennessee in the first place, and it’s a part of the reason why he’s being considered as a practice squad option to stick around. He’s a ball player with clear talent, and if he continues to develop, perhaps he breaks into the active rotation one day. Or, perhaps he just becomes this team’s new Mason Kinsey. Every franchise could use some high-level practice squad personalities.
