Former Tennessee Titan and current Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry came up one yard short of NFL history on Sunday Night Football. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh made a decision that cost Henry a chance of reaching football immortality.
Henry dazzled in a 35-10 victory over the buffalo Bills on Sunday. He was vintage Henry, breaking an 87-yard touchdown run that was the longest in Baltimore Ravens history.
In the game's final minutes, Henry was sitting at 199 rushing yards…one away from eclipsing 200 rushing yards for the seventh time in his NFL career. Henry is currently tied with Adrian Peterson and O.J. Simpson for the all-time NFL record with six 200+ yard games.
But on a 3rd-and-7, instead of handing the ball to Henry for the record, Harbaugh elected to throw a one-yard pass with 38-year-old backup quarterback Josh Johnson. Johnson checked down to Henry, and the Ravens would not get the ball back after the ensuing punt.
One thing that makes Derrick Henry unique from the running backs currently enshrined in the Hall of Fame is his ability to take a game over as the bell cow. Every time Henry has gone over 200 rushing yards in his career, he has also recorded 2+ touchdowns and his team has won.
Henry has 22 games in his career with 128 or more rushing yards. His teams are 21-1 in those games. Derrick Henry has a unique ability to carry his team to victory. That will be the legacy he leaves behind when he retires and is ultimately inducted into the Hall of Fame one day. It would have been fitting for him to also stand alone atop the leaderboard for 200 yard games in a career.
John Harbaugh robbed us all of that moment on Sunday Night Football…It's a shame.
Titans have now gone over 1,000 days without accomplishing a basic NFL task
The streak is getting hard to believe.
