Former NFL cornerback Buster Skrine was reportedly arrested on Wednesday and is being charged with multiple counts of fraud, the Durham Regional Police announced in a statement. 

The fraud-related charges total more than $100,000.

Skrine allegedly attended "numerous financial institutions" across Canada, saying he was a retired NFL player and would open accounts with fraudulent check. He would then "obtain a portion of money" before the check cleared.

Durham Regional Police added that they had "reason to believe the same male has been committing similar offenses across Canada." 

He was arrested at Pearson International Airport in Toronto as Skrine had made arrangements to fly back to the United States. 

Skrine is being charged with four counts of fraud over $5,000, seven counts of making a false statement to procure money, three counts of possess property obtained by crime over $5,000, and one count of possess property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Skrine began his career with the Cleveland Browns, being drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. After four years with the Browns, he went to the New York Jets for four years, followed by the Chicago Bears for two years, one year with the San Francisco 49ers, and the Tennessee Titans for one year. 

He officially announced his retirement in July 2022, finishing his 11 year career with 590 tackles, 3.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and 10 interceptions across 157 games played.
