If John Harbaugh interviews with the Titans, there’s one big reason they might actually think twice about hiring him

Harbaugh’s demands could dictate where he lands.

The Tennessee Titans enter week two of their head coaching search on Monday, one week away from when in-person interviews with coaches currently employed in the league can legally be conducted.

Their interview request list is up to 16 through the first week, but there’s at least one more big one they’re waiting to hear from. The giant domino everybody is watching right now is former Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, who is working through his plan for 2026 this weekend. But while he is rightfully everybody’s top choice in this cycle, there’s one significant reason why Amy Adams Strunk might think twice about hiring him.

John Harbaugh’s power demands are steep

Initial guesses weren’t exactly positive when it came to how interested John Harbaugh would be in the Tennessee Job. But Dianna Russini reported that as a part of his evaluation of which jobs he’d consider, Harbaugh was spending the weekend watching Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart.

The expectation, according to reports, is that he’ll eventually interview with 2 or 3 teams. The hope for Tennessee, obviously, is that they’re amongst them.

But what will Harbaugh be asking for from his prospective teams? If you trust longtime Browns beat writer Tony Grossi, the answer is a ton. He reported last week that the veteran coach will be asking for a $20M annual salary, $10M annual budget for assistants, “total authority” over the roster, and input on the GM.

Now, choose to take this as gospel at your own risk. I won’t explicitly call Grossi’s report nonsense, but I do find it extremely suspicious that he’d have access to a reportable list of such specific demands.

Regardless, it brings up the importance of question pertinent to the Titans here: if Harbaugh gives you the time of day in an interview, how much power should you be willing to give him?

I wrote last week that GM Mike Borgonzi and President of Football Operations Chad Brinker owe it to their fanbase and to this franchise to run a full-court press on Harbaugh, even if he isn’t particularly interested in them. But if his ultimatum is ultimate control, it’s fair to second guess that. Mike Borgonzi is a football mind worthy of influence in this operation. If it’s true that Harbaugh wants to snatch all (or most) of that power for himself, I would understand Amy Adams Strunk second-guessing giving that an easy green light.
