Titans Vrabel

When the Tennessee Titans fired Mike Vrabel earlier this week, many folks assumed he'd become the new head coach of the New England Patriots if/when the franchise parted ways with Bill Belichick.

Indeed, the Patriots and Belichick agreed to a mutual separation days after the Titans fired Vrabel. But instead of hiring Vrabel, the Patriots opted to promote linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, a former Tennessee Vols standout, to head coach.

It was written into Mayo's contract last offseason that he would be the replacement for Belichick in New England. At the time, the Carolina Panthers had requested to interview Mayo. His contract was updated to keep him in New England instead of interviewing for head coaching jobs.

Vrabel is considered a somewhat hot commodity as a head coach. He led the Titans to two AFC South division titles and the No. 1 overall seed in the 2021 playoffs during his time in Nashville.

Mike Vrabel linked to Raiders job thanks to relationship with Tom Brady

SI.com's Albert Breer suggested on Friday that Vrabel could be a name to watch for the Las Vegas Raiders thanks to his friendship with Tom Brady.

Vrabel and Brady were teammates in New England and maintain a close friendship.

Breer noted that Brady is working to become a minority owner of the Raiders. The deal hasn't been approved by the league yet due to the amount of the sale (the price is too low essentially). Breer believes Raiders owner Mark Davis will find a way to make Brady part of the ownership group soon. And Breer also thinks that Brady could potentially give Vrabel's name to Davis as an option he endorses. He also thinks that former Titans interim general manager Ryan Cowden, the man Vrabel wanted as the general manager in Tennessee, could be an option to join Vrabel in Las Vegas.

From SI.com: Brady’s respect for Vrabel would likely put him at the top of any list he’d give Davis. And the Raiders, of course, could offer Vrabel a roster that got to 8–9 despite all the tumult this season, with key veteran pieces aboard and the chance to bring a GM like Ryan Cowden with him to build the program.

It's worth noting that Raiders superstar pass rusher Maxx Crosby endorsed interim head coach Antonio Pierce for the job on Friday.
