National report proves John Harbaugh might seriously have interest in Titans’ head coach job and QB Cam Ward
Former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh set to watch film on Titans QB Cam Ward and New York Giants QB Jaxson Dart.
The Tennessee Titans are in desperate need of a head coach who can breathe fresh new life into the struggling franchise after back-to-back three-win seasons. Many fans and media believe the perfect new head coach could be John Harbaugh, the former Baltimore Ravens head coach who was just relieved of his duties.
Now, based on the latest national reporting, it looks like that might become reality. However, at least one other NFL team has caught his eye, too.
John Harbaugh diving into film of Titans QB Cam Ward and Giants QB Jaxson Dart
Several NFL teams have publicly communicated interest in pursuing Harbaugh as their next head coach. Not many of them can say that he’s specifically spending the next few days breaking down film on their young starting quarterback.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Harbaugh is spending the next few days watching film on both rookie first-round quarterbacks from the 2025 NFL Draft class: Jaxson Dart of the New York Giants and Cam Ward of the Tennessee Titans. Both teams are looking for their next head coach and could use a stabilizing veteran like Harbaugh.
What does it mean that Harbaugh is watching Ward, and will he like what he sees enough to join Titans?
Harbaugh is clearly trying to figure out which potential NFL landing spot would give him the brightest future. Nailing down which young quarterback he would like to build around will clearly have a huge impact on his decision. Will Ward’s rookie film be good enough for Harbaugh to highly consider becoming the next head of the Tennessee Titans?
Dart held the edge over Ward this season in passer rating, QBR, yards per pass attempt, completion rate, and almost every other statistical category except for raw passing yards. However, Ward certainly made some elite NFL throws this season that could catch Harbaugh’s eye more so than anything Dart did for the Giants.
I asked our A to Z Sports Titans’ beat reporter, Easton Freeze, for his thoughts on the situation and what it truly means that Harbaugh is breaking down his film. Here’s what he had to say:
“Does Harbaugh watching Ward film mean too much? No, at least, not yet. However, in this year’s coaching carousel, Harbaugh is the belle of the ball. The shocking divorce after 18 years in Baltimore reshaped the NFL landscape of the offseason, with his name shooting to the top of everybody’s shortlist,” Freeze said.
“Teams with openings, and at least a couple without one (yet), have expressed interest. But as badly as the Titans could use the kind of stability and experience that Harbaugh would bring, there’s been very little reason for hope that he’d ever consider them. Until now. Harbaugh’s camp made it clear this week that they aren’t doing any head coaching interviews until the week after the wild-card round of the playoffs.
“He’s regrouping, consolidating his staffing options and plan of attack before doing the circuit. The Titans haven’t explicitly requested an interview with him yet, or at least it’s not leaked to the public. But there’s no doubt they were one of the teams blowing up Harbaugh’s agent’s phone the day he was fired.”
It’s still too early to know if Harbaugh will actually land with the Titans, but many believe it’s a possibility, especially now. Albert Breer shared that he thinks the Titans are one of four teams he sees as a realistic landing spot for Harbaugh (as you can see in his post below).
Tennessee’s list of official interview requests is up to 16 through a full week of this year’s scramble for head coaching candidates. If Harbaugh decides he likes what he sees from Ward and other young players on this roster, perhaps he makes it 17 soon.
Regardless of how the film breakdowns of Ward and Dart go for Harbaugh, Titans fans should definitely want their favorite team to land the former Ravens coach. He offers everything that the Titans need and are clearly looking for this offseason.
Harbaugh has 18 years of NFL head coaching experience, a proven track record of winning, and a Super Bowl ring. He’s always been a progressive-minded coach, not afraid to take risks and play by the latest analytics handbook (unlike interim head coach Mike McCoy or other recent Titans coaches).
Not only that, he’s proven that he can win with and develop young quarterbacks. He won immediately with Joe Flacco many years ago and oversaw Lamar Jackson’s meteoric rise to NFL MVP status. Fans of the two-tone blue just need to pray Harbaugh likes what he sees in Cam Ward and gives the Titans a chance.
