Good news and bad news for the Titans new draft reality.

The Tennessee Titans had been in cruise control with the first overall draft pick for weeks. As soon as they became the only team with just one win, they had nothing else to worry about. It was theirs. And each time we began to think they may progress enough to steal another win, they’d take a step back.

That is, until Week 14 in Cleveland. The Titans put it all together just enough to beat another dreadful team in the snow, on the back of a career-best rushing day from Tony Pollard and the offensive line. They now sit at third in the projected draft order, and that means missing out on a franchise-altering trade.

Titans land foundational prospect, miss out on trade

ESPN fantasy football and NFL Draft analyst Field Yates released a fresh mock draft this week with the Titans picking in their new slot. We’ll get to the bad news in a moment, but first the good news. Tennessee lands who most consider to be the most talented football player in this class, Ohio State LB/EDGE Arvell Reese.

“After just 0.5 sacks as mostly a linebacker last season,” Yates wrote of Reese, “he posted 6.5 sacks as a primary edge rusher this year. Reese has exceptional burst and power, plus the frame to be a standout NFL edge rusher. As an every-down player, he would form a perfect pairing next to defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons.”

Reese is a no-brainer blue chip prospect with only one significant question: Will he be at his best as a pure pass rusher in the NFL? From a college-to-pro projection standpoint, the way Ohio State has chosen to utilize him makes that a tad tricky. But when he’s been asked to play that part, he’s looked like a natural. His physical tools are a green light too. There’s just that hang up of the projection, a small leap of faith, that you have to make with him different from other full-time edge rushers.

Reese feels like he pretty comfortably falls into the K.I.S.S. bucket: keep it simple, stupid. Take game-changing football players, then figure out the rest later.

Now, for the bad news. Because Tennessee won in Cleveland, they’re missing the bus on both Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza and Oregon QB Dante Moore. The Giants trade with the Jets in this mock, accepting picks 7, 18, and a Day 2 selection to make Mendoza a member of Gang Green. Then Vegas grabs Geno Smith’s eventual replacement in Dante Moore with the second pick.

I wrote about the potential values of trading the first pick from both a projection standpoint as well as a historical standpoint in this article here. The surplus value, should the Titans get back into position to make a deal, would be somewhere between an addition late 1st to a pair of 1sts in the low teens. Whatever the haul ends up looking like, it’s a potentially franchise-altering trade for whichever franchise gets to make it. And at the current rate, that won’t be Tennessee. Each fan must weigh in their own heart the importance of that opportunity against the value of winning and development for Cam Ward & Co.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
