The Brian Callahan era in Nashville came to an abrupt end on Monday afternoon when the second-year head coach was fired by the Tennessee Titans.

Callahan, hired by the Titans to replace Mike Vrabel in early 2024, went 4-19 during his brief tenure as the team’s head coach.

The former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator’s final game as the Titans’ head coach was a 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Las Vegas Raiders coach makes damning comment about the Tennessee Titans

An unnamed Las Vegas coach told The Athletic following the Raiders’ win on Sunday that the Titans might be the worst team he’s seen in the last 25 years.

“That might be the worst team I’ve seen in the last 25 years,” said the Raiders coach of the Titans. “They don’t have any difference-makers other than (defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons), and the whole thing was a total mess.”

Yikes.

If you have any questions about why Callahan was fired, that quote should answer them.

That quote also falls in line with what Titans President Chad Brinker said on Monday evening about the decision to fire Callahan.

“We were looking for growth in this football team, and that is what this is about right now,” said Brinker. “We are not seeing enough growth from this football team. We are 1 and 5, and we have to be better. We are all frustrated. We understand that the fans are frustrated with everything that is going on.”

Firing a coach early in the season is often a futile reaction born out of frustration. But when an opposing coach calls your team the worst he’s seen in a quarter century, it’s easy to understand why a change had to be made.
