The one way the Packers can steal a win against the Titans defense without relying on Malik Willis in Week 3

If you watched the Colts-Packers Week 2 game, you know just how bad Indianapolis’s defense looked. In particular, against Green Bay’s strong run game.

Malik Willis was also there. He managed the game and completed a couple passes, but the gameplan was to win without him. And to the Packers credit—and in Willis’s defense—they didn’t need him to drop back any more than he did.

the Colts defense is in very rough shape. Their run defense is currently amongst the worst in the league. In Week 3, the Packers are likely going to have to try to pull another Malik Willis win out of their hat against a much stiffer unit.

The Titans defense has started 2024 very strong. in many statistical categories, they’re the best in the league so far. Between the tackles, they have a 700+ pound brick wall in Jeffery Simmons and T’Vondre Sweat. Running on those two has proven unsuccessful for those who have tried.

But there is a way for the Packers to run successfully on this stout Titans defense. In the tweet below is a 4-play cutup of every explosive run play (10+ yards) the Titans defense has allowed. See if you can spot what they have in common:

In case it wasn’t obvious, the way to run on this Titans team is to test the edge. When runners have gotten wide in a hurry, they’ve found much more success than in the traditional between-the-tackles run game.

Harold Landry is solid setting the edge, but the rest of the Titans OLB group can be beat. And the Titans MLB group is great at getting downhill, getting after the QB, and plugging gaps up the middle. But when you get them running sideline-to-sideline, they can be beat as well.

you even get some subpar angles taken by defensive backs on the tape. The bottom line is that if you get the ball carrier in space and running towards the boundary, you can run the ball on this otherwise very stiff Titans defense.

Defensive Coordinator Dennard Wilson told reporters that setting the edge has been a huge emphasis for them this week. They aren’t unaware of this weak spot. Perhaps they improve in that department in a hurry. If they can minimize explosives in that phase of the game, they stand a very good chance against a Malik Willis-led Packers offense.
