NASHVILLE — Welcome to the AtoZ Sports Saturday Social where we rake the dregs ofthe internet for your weekend entertainment.
Each Saturday, the best and not often brightest social media has to offer will be displayed and categorized here for you to consume. The categories are as follows:
- The Weekly Dish: What carried social media conversation this week.
- Wake & Take: A take so fried it would give Cheech & Chong a contact high.
- Sweet, Sweet Justice: An individual that got what they deserved.
- Wait, What??: If it made you do a double take, it qualifies.
- Gone Viral: A video that took the internet by storm.
NFL Combine Week always presents a bevy of rumors, stories and leads to chase. Lucky for us, the Tennessee Titans might be in the Tom Brady business and the Coronavirus is in the news. Let’s dive in, shall we?
The Weekly Dish
Jeff Darlington stays stoking the Tom Brady Free Agent Fires this offseason. Inject it right into my veins.
The Brady-to-Nashville rumors have legs and completely dominated the entire conversation around the bars and hotel lobbies NFL personnel frequent while in Downtown Indianapolis. Said one source: "I truly believe it's between the Titans and Raiders and Oakland's not really close."
Bringing Brady to Tennessee would be a massive gamble on the part of coach Mike Vrabel and GM Jon Robinson. Winning cures all but also emboldens and the two should tread lightly with their 43-year-old pal. Brady would sell out Nissan Stadium and would still allow cap space for Derrick Henry’s return. But even having this out in the atmosphere is bad for relations with Ryan Tannehill.
Don’t be so quick to spurn the man whose yards per attempt average was a 9.6 in 2018. The next closest was Matt Stafford at 8.6.
Brady sat at 30th out of qualifying QBs for an average of 6.6.
Wake & Take
As if traditional beer didn't already have to look over it's shoulder for the impending White Claw revolution, I give you the dumbest thing on the internet this week.
5W Public Relations said that 38% of Americans wouldn't buy Corona "under any circumstances" because of the outbreak, and another 14% said they wouldn't order a Corona in public. The survey encompasses polling from 737 beer drinkers in the United States.
Surely we cannot be this stupid as a society. The idea that online searches for "corona beer virus" spiked this month speaks to our inability to read actual articles rather and just use a headline to create our own narrative. Someone make sure Uncle Leroy gets a link to distribute to his conspiracy theory Facebook group.
In all seriousness, whenever the word "pandemic" is mentioned, attention should be paid. Just make sure your smart enough to take precautionary measures, buy the right face masks and drink the correct beer.
Internet, we salute you.
Sweet, Sweet Justice
Twitter was created for trolls. The "2020 Astros Shame Tour" account is the best of us right now.
Wait, What?
Ok, so former Alabama receiver Jerry Jeudy wore a Star of David chain to his combine media availability with the explanation that his nickname is "Jeu." While this Jeu does not happen to be a part of The Tribe, he put out a public apology for those he may have offended. The initial exchange between Jeudy and the media when he said it was equal parts hilarious and awkward for those of us who were there to witness. I'd be lying to you if I said that I did not chuckle at his explanation but it was not a joke that received consensus applause.
Imagine: a bunch of middle-aged, white guys already treading lightly around young, black athlete who they share precious little in common with and one of them is using a religious symbol for prop comedy. Delightfully awkward to witness and much more relateable than what I witnessed last year with Jachai Polite.
Gone Viral
The peak of internet fame is appearing on Ellen.
Jalaiah's Renegade dance has taken the internet by storm, earned her viral fame and even got her an appearance at last week's NBA All Star game. In full transparency, I have attempted to learn the dance as AtoZ Sports begins to explore the wild world of TikTok but I have experienced precious little success.
Maybe one day, we will release those tapes. Nothing fuels the Saturday Social like public same.
