BREAKING: Titans coach Luke Steckel leaving team for Chicago Bears
Long-time assistant coach Luke Steckel is preparing to leave the organization after 10 years with the Titans.
Tennessee Titans run game analyst and long-time offensive assistant Luke Steckel is preparing to leave the team for a role with the Chicago Bears on the offensive line staff, according to multiple sources.
Steckel spent the last two seasons as Tennessee's tight ends coach before having his role changed earlier this month. When the Titans promoted Tim Kelly to be their next offensive coordinator, Mike Vrabel reshuffled deck, placing Steckel into an analyst role that he believed would allow Steckel to do advanced work with the entire offense rather than being tied to one position group.
Because the Run Game Analyst is a new position within the organization that was created this offseason, it is unclear if the change was a promotion, demotion, or lateral move for Steckel.
Steckel even received an interview for the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator job. But despite his success as tight ends coach (the same position held by both Todd Downing and Arthur Smith prior to their promotions) and interest from the Chargers for their offensive coordinator job, Steckel was not one of the candidates reportedly considered for Tennessee's OC vacancy.
Tim Kelly, the former passing game coordinator who spent the entire season working with Steckel and the tight ends, received the promotion instead.
Steckel coached with the Titans for an entire decade. He first joined the staff in 2013, long before the Vrabel era began, as the special assistant to the head coach. He then worked his way up the ladder to tight ends coach, where he thrived last season.
In 2022, Steckel’s tight ends were responsible for 30 percent of Titans receptions on the season, with 64 percent of those receptions (54 of 85) going for first downs. Rookie tight end Chig Okonkwo took major steps in his development and established himself as a big play threat, averaging over 14 yards per catch in 2022.

Now, Steckel takes his coaching acumen to Chicago, joining the staff of second-year head coach Matt Eberflus. Eberflus and Steckel coached together for two seasons with the Cleveland Browns back in the day from 2009-2010. At the time, Steckel was the assistant to head coach Eric Mangini, while Eberflus was working as a linebackers coach.
The Steckel Family has deep ties to the Titans' organization. Luke's father, Les Steckel, was the offensive coordinator in Tennessee for the memorable 1999 season and Super Bowl run.
It's now off to the next chapter for Steckel, who will chase the his new opportunity in the Windy City as the young and upcoming Bears try to turn things around from a 3-14 season in 2022.
