NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs agreed to a trade on Wednesday morning that will send five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to KC and a conditional fourth-round draft pick back to Music City.
Hopkins has recorded 15 receptions and 173 receiving yards so far this season. His numbers are lower than usual with the Titans' offense struggling mightily to open the season. Hopkins has just one catch in three of Tennessee's six games.
A trade has felt imminent for Hopkins for some time now. He is on an expiring contract and at this stage in his career, deserves an opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl. Now, he gets to do just that with the defending champion Chiefs and the Titans get some draft compensation back instead of losing Hopkins for nothing in the offseason.
But did Tennessee get enough? Let's take a look at recent deals made around the NFL for wide receivers like Davante Adams and Amari Cooper and grade the trade for the Titans.
Davante Adams Trade Compensation
The Las Vegas Raiders received a conditional third-round pick from the New York Jets for Davante Adams last week. The conditions, however, are pretty lofty and probably mean it will end up being a third-rounder going to Vegas when it's all said and done.
While the Jets are taking on Adams' contract, there's not a lot of guaranteed money remaining on the deal. That gives the team some financial options this offseason if they want to cut Adams and stay away from his $35.6 million base salary.
Overall, this is probably on par with the price for Hopkins. Adams is younger, has been more productive, and is generally a bit more dominant than Hopkins. While DHop is a nearly perfect fit for the Chiefs' offense at this point, Adams is the better player and was always going to cost more.
Amari Cooper Trade Compensation
The Cleveland Browns sent five-time Pro Bowler Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills last week along with a 2025 sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2025 third- and 2026 seventh-round draft pick.
Cooper also comes to the Bills as cheap as possible. Buffalo is taking on just $806,667 for the remainder of the season and giving Josh Allen a true WR1 to throw to.
By swapping a 2025 sixth-round pick for a future seventh-rounder, the Bills were also able to upgrade the compensation to a third-round selection this year. That feels like a good deal for Buffalo when you realize Davante Adams – who I would rather have than Cooper – will likely end up netting Vegas a third-round pick.
Titans Grade: B
I'll give the Titans a solid B on the DeAndre Hopkins trade. At 32-years-old with the MCL injury and little production this season, I don't think Tennessee should have expected a return similar to what the Raiders or Browns got.
A conditional fifth-round pick that could become a fourth-rounder is fair…but doesn't blow me away by any stretch of the imagination.
I have a hard time giving this deal any grade above a B because this trade represents the failure of the Tennessee Titans as an organization. You had another future Hall of Famer on your roster and wasted it away. Hopkins was the perfect culture fit in Nashville. He embraced the city and fanbase wholeheartedly and proved to the NFL world that he's still got "it" on the field.
The fact that the Titans had to make this move is a failure…But given the situation Ran Carthon and the front office is now in, they got enough where it doesn't feel like a complete waste.
Tennessee did right by Hopkins, giving him a chance to go win his coveted Super Bowl, and got something of value back in return. The deal makes sense. The returning draft capital makes sense. But Titans fans definitely won't be celebrating this one.
DeAndre Hopkins trade means Titans are officially waving the white flag on the 2024 season
Tennessee gives the veteran wide receiver a chance to really compete.
